Project Phases & Timeline

The I-64 Improvement Project, currently in the construction phase, is a multi-year project that will widen I-64 from the US 35/I-64 Interchange to just east of the Nitro Interchange. A widened  I-64 will not just improve traffic volume capacity, but will also enhance safety and support continued economic growth in the area.

Phase 1 - Winter 2020/21

Construction

  • I-64 westbound widening from the Bills Creek Road Bridge to the Nitro Bridge.
  • New I-64 westbound River Bridge.
  • Reconstruction of the St. Albans Interchange and I-64 Connector.

Work Zone Impacts

  • I-64 eastbound traffic will be maintained on existing lanes.
  • I-64 westbound traffic will be shifted towards the median.
  • Traffic will be maintained on all ramps, except during the weekend ramp closures due to tie-in ramp work at the St. Albans Interchange.
  • Bill Creek Road traffic will be maintained using single-lane alternating traffic.
  • The St. Albans connector entrance/exit ramp road will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
Phase 2 - Spring 2021

Construction

  • I-64 westbound widening from the US-35 Interchange to the St. Albans Interchange.
  • Continued construction of the new I-64 westbound river bridge.
  • New bridges at Rocky Step Road and McCloud Road.

Work Zone Impacts

  • Two lanes of I-64 traffic will be maintained in each direction.
  • During Phase 2, westbound traffic will be split to provide a “contra-flow” configuration.
Phase 3 - Fall 2021 Construction

Construction

  • The widening and reconstruction of I-64 from the River Bridge to east of the Nitro Interchange, along with the replacement of the Nitro Bridge over WV 25.
  • Completion of the new I-64 westbound river bridge.

Work Zone Impacts

  • Traffic will be maintained on all ramps, except during the weekend ramp closures due to tie-in ramp work at the Nitro Interchange.
Phase 4 - Fall 2021 Construction

Construction

  • New eastbound River Bridge and eastbound pavement from the St. Albans Interchange to  Nitro Bridge.
  • New tie-ins for St. Albans westbound exit ramp.
  • Demolition of existing bridge truss.

Work Zone Impacts

  • Two lanes of I-64 traffic will be maintained in each direction, shifting eastbound and westbound traffic onto the westbound River Bridge.
Phase 5 - Summer 2023 Construction

  • New I-64 median from the St. Albans Interchange to the Nitro Bridge.

Work Zone Impacts

  • I-64 traffic will be shifted to use the outside shoulder.

Construction

  • The widening of WV Route 817.

Work Zone Impacts

  • One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times in each direction, in addition to a left turn lane to the connector road.
