Project Details

The I-64 Improvement Project will widen the interstate from four to six lanes for 3.8 miles between the US 35 and Nitro Interchanges. In addition to a widened I-64, the project will bring a variety of improvements to the area, allowing for safer journeys and continued growth such as:

Bridge Icon
The construction of a new bridge over the Kanawha River for westbound I-64 traffic.
Hard Hat
Rehabilitation of the existing I-64 bridge over the Kanawha River for eastbound I-64 traffic only.
Highway
Reconstruction of the St. Albans interchange to include flyover ramps.
Bridge No Water
Replacement of the I-64 Mainline Bridges over: Rocky Step Road, McCloud Road, and the Nitro Interchange, in addition to the Bill’s Creek Road Bridge (CR44) over I-64.
Dozer
Replacement of pavement.

Project Funding

Funded in part by a $20 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program, the total project cost is $224.4 million.

Design & Construction

Construction work is being carried out by Brayman Construction & Trumbull, A Joint Venture, while design work is being performed by HDR Engineering, Inc.
